Quick Trip To The Redwoods

Turning lemons into lemonade! Last summer our beloved 1986 Ford F-150 was in an accident and totaled. However since it was my Grandpa’s truck and my husband has poured his heart and soul into rebuilding it into his dream truck, we weren’t going to let if go. It is on it’s fourth body shop and should be ready soon! We bought my brother’s old car to use in the mean time when they were selling everything and leaving to sail around the Pacific Ocean on their sailboat. (follow their adventure HERE).

Our “Low Down Car” Fit!

Long story short, our oldest daughter dropped a random comment about how our low down car, as she calls it, would fit through the drive thru tree in the Redwoods. This started the planning of a quick trip down to the nearest Drive Thru tree, the Tour Thru Tree in Klamath, CA.

Since this summer I’m teaching summer school, coordinating weddings and events and putting in a lot of hours for the school district we thought it would be a good idea to cross a few other things off our Summer Fun List while we were at it. I started looking for a cabin to stay in overnight. I was hoping for one with a pool, but I had no luck. The night before I packed the car and got everything loaded up, even the cooler. (Side Note-We LOVE our K-box Electric Cooler. I can pack up the cooler the night before and we plugged it into the garage for the night. It also plugs into the car so things are always cold.) Once we were ready to hit the road, we just told the girls we needed to run to the store. They loaded up with their tablets and never asked where we were going…even after two hours in the car they still hadn’t asked! We stopped for lunch and that’s when we told them the store was in California.

I was able to find a wonderful cabin at Crescent City/Redwoods KOA Holiday KOA, even on short notice. The cabin was set back in the woods a little bit and our kids had a wonderful time exploring the campground.

Once we got settled at the cabin, I realized I had forgot the crock pot to cook the chili for Haystacks for dinner, and I was planning to make Crockpot Blueberry French Toast for breakfast but I forgot that too. So on the way to the Tour Thru Tree we stopped at the store to get a pan and some cereal. It was nice to cook over a campfire and we had smore’s and read stories about Paul Bunyan in anticipation for Trees of Mystery in the morning.

We got up and checked out of our cabin and headed to Trees of Mystery. First on the list was to say hello to Paul Bunyan and Babe! Paul will wave, wink, smile, and even talk with you. We spent several hours at Trees of Mystery and did the Canopy Trail (netted suspension bridges through these majestic old-growth redwoods) and the Sky Trail (gondola ride), and hiked all the trails. It was the perfect skill level for our non-hiking family.

All in all it was a wonderful whirlwind vacation and we made it back home just in time to get ready to go back to work the next morning.
